Giles Colborne, CX Partners: Leading from the front, centre and side
How do you learn to lead when you don’t seem to have any role models? When do you have the opportunity to lead? And why should you even want to lead? Giles will talk about finding a leadership style that suits you, about recognising what qualities you bring to leadership and about the styles of leadership that are best suited to the situations that UX professionals often find them selves in.
Giles is author of Simple and usable web mobile and interaction design published by New Riders in September 2010. He has been working in usability and user centred design since 1991. He formed cxpartners with Richard Caddick in 2004 focusing on creating outstanding user experiences and measurable changes to projects and products. They work with companies such as Vodafone, Marriott, LOVEFiLM and Channel 4. Giles is also a former President of the UK Usability Professionals’ Association and now sits on their Global Advisory Committee and International Conference Committee. He has worked with British Standards Institute in developing guidance on web accessibility.
Leslie Fountain, Foolproof: Authentic Leadership
You don’t need to be ‘the boss’ or the head of a UX department to be an authentic leader. In our industry, we are often leading from the middle – be it consulting for a client or trying to convince our organisation that putting customers at the heart of design will bring value. We play a leadership role in moderating user research, facilitating workshops and influencing design. The UX industry should take a page from business management to help us play a stronger role in influencing change.
Leslie is the Experience Design Director at Foolproof. In 2007, she completed an Executive MBA at Cass Business School. When not working, you can find me at the UK UPA (Professional Development Representative), giving presentations at industry conferences, studying Italian, embarking on a motorcycle licence, or running along London streets.
Aoife Ni Mhorain, IG Group: Personal experiences of transitioning from practice to management
After 6 years working as a UX practitioner Aoife has spent the last 7 months managing the UX team at IG Index. She will share stories of the challenges and rewards of becoming Head of UX after just 9 months in the company as a Senior UX designer. Before joining IG Group Aoife was a UX consultant at Flow Interactive for 5 years, where she worked with clients such as the BBC, Vodafone and Standard Life. She has a Masters in Interaction Design from the RCA.
Jason Cale, Go Free Range: Teams without leadership
Jason’s company isn’t specifically a UX company (i.e. we don’t advertise ourselves as such), but as there primary focus is on building software for the web, UX is a really important part of our over all process. The company is kind of a leaderless cooperative of UX designers and they’re tackling the problem of how you work without leaders. Jase will discuss how do they make decisions (Voting doesn’t always work.), how they divide up the admin tasks (They do this randomly!) and how they hold people to account.
If you have any questions about the event please contact Martina Schell (PR@ukupa.org.uk) who is the organiser of this event or Chandra Harrison (president@ukupa.org.uk).
